A Manchester provider of career-focused HNCs, HNDs and top-up degrees, built for UK residents and adult learners. What it offers, how study works and why visa applicants should look elsewhere.
Free consultation Are you a representative of this institution?UCEN Manchester is the higher education brand of LTE Group[1], a Manchester provider whose roots go back almost 200 years to Sunday school education. It teaches career-focused qualifications: Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, foundation degrees and one-year top-up bachelor's degrees in subjects from cyber security and engineering to film, theatre and counselling. The model suits people who want to study one year at a time: every step ends with a qualification, and three steps add up to an honours degree. There is one fact to know before anything else, though. UCEN Manchester does not accept international applications, so for most readers outside the UK this page explains why, and where in Manchester to look instead.

| Type | Higher education provider; UCEN Manchester is a trading name of LTE Group[1] |
| Degree awarding | Own degree awarding powers since 2026; other courses validated by Sheffield Hallam University and Manchester Metropolitan University[2] |
| Qualifications | HNC, HND, CertHE, foundation degrees, bachelor's and top-up degrees, postgraduate and professional courses, Access to Higher Education[2] |
| Campuses | City Campus Manchester, Openshaw Campus, CityLabs[3] |
| Teaching quality | TEF Silver; 93% satisfaction with teaching and 91% with academic support in the National Student Survey 2025[4] |
| How to apply | UCAS for most full-time undergraduate courses, directly for many part-time and professional courses[2] |
| International applicants | Not accepted "due to UKVI regulations"[5] |
| Housing | No own halls; students search through Manchester Student Homes[6] |
In practice, no. Course pages state it directly: UCEN Manchester "is unable to consider international applications due to UKVI regulations"[5]. UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration.
The reason is the sponsor licence. A UK Student visa requires an offer from a licensed student sponsor[7], and UCEN Manchester, The Manchester College and LTE Group do not appear in the government register of licensed student sponsors (register checked in October 2026)[8].

For the students it does serve, mostly UK residents and adults returning to education, UCEN Manchester has a clear and practical profile. The limitations matter mainly for applicants who expect a traditional university.
UK higher education has several qualifications below a full bachelor's degree, and UCEN Manchester is built around them. A Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year; a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a foundation degree (FdA or FdSc) takes two years full-time[2]. A top-up turns either into a BA or BSc honours degree in one more year.
Some courses are Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ), technical programmes at degree level that last one or two years[4]. Many computing and engineering courses, such as the Cyber Security (Defensive Threat Detection) foundation degree (UCAS code G550) and its BSc top-up, are taught at City Campus Manchester[10]. Professional courses in teacher education and construction management run alongside the degree programmes.
Since 2026 UCEN Manchester has had its own degree awarding powers, which lets it design its own degrees. Other courses remain validated by Sheffield Hallam University and Manchester Metropolitan University[2]. Your degree certificate names the awarding institution, which is the detail to check on each course page.

UCEN Manchester has three main locations. City Campus Manchester on Great Ducie Street opened in September 2022 in the city centre and has a Students' Union bar and cafe and a roof terrace[11]. Openshaw Campus, near the Etihad Stadium, was refurbished in 2021 and hosts sports facilities[12]. CityLabs, in Manchester's Knowledge Quarter, is home to the School of Medicine, Health Sciences and Medical Engineering[13].
Each course is taught at a particular campus, so check the campus on the course page before you choose where to live. Manchester Student Homes lists approved landlords and offers free advice, including contract checking[6]. Tuition fees also cover access to support services, including welfare, careers and housing advice and counselling[9].
Tuition fees depend on the qualification and mode of study and are published on each course page and in the Fees and Finance section[2]. Students who have not studied a degree in the UK before are likely to be eligible for a Student Finance loan to cover tuition[9]. Repayment starts only once income passes the threshold, currently 33,088 USD a year[9].
Extra support can include UCEN Manchester bursaries, the Disabled Students' Allowance, childcare support and hardship funds[2]. Budget for equipment as well: computing courses recommend a laptop, estimated at 397 USD, and a portable hard drive at about 53 USD[5]. Student Finance is a UK system, which is another reason the college's funding model does not fit students from abroad.

If you missed the main application cycle, Clearing gives another chance to apply where places remain[2]. Applicants without standard qualifications but with relevant work experience may be considered individually and invited to interview[5].
If you need a Student visa, choose an institution that holds a sponsor licence[7]. In Greater Manchester the register includes the following[8]:
| Institution | Type | Worth considering if |
|---|---|---|
| University of Manchester | Research university | You want a research-intensive university and a wide choice of degrees |
| Manchester Metropolitan University | University | You want applied and professional degrees; it also validates some UCEN courses |
| Royal Northern College of Music | Conservatoire | You are a musician applying through auditions |
| BIMM University | Specialist music and creative provider | You are looking for music industry, performance or film courses |
| University of Greater Manchester | University in Bolton | You prefer a smaller university in the Greater Manchester area |
| INTO Manchester | Pathway provider | Your school certificate is not enough for direct entry and you need a foundation year |
Our guides to universities in the UK and the UK admission process explain how to compare these options and apply through UCAS.
