The history of MEPhI
1942 – the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition opened. The initial task of the university was to train personnel for the military programs of the Soviet Union. The institute had three faculties: tubes and fuses, shells and mines, air bombs, rounds and cartridges. 1945 – reorganized into the Moscow Mechanical Institute, in accordance with the decree on the opening of the Faculty of Engineering and Physics for training the specialists in the nuclear industry. Over time, work on the step by step transfer of mechanical specialties to other institutes, and the expansion of the engineering and physical profile began. 1953 – renamed the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and the creation of the first MEPhI branches in closed cities (modern Ozersk, Novouralsk, Lesnoy, and Sarov) for the training of field engineers. Later branches were opened in Obninsk, Snezhinsk, and Trekhgorny. The Institute trained nuclear specialists in all areas of specialization and gained worldwide fame. 1964 – while working at MEPhI, academicians Nikolay Basov, Alexander Prokhorov, and Charles H. Towns became laureates of the Nobel Prize in physics for research in the field of quantum electronics. Academician Nikolay Basov, who dedicated more than 40 years to work at MEPhI, received a monument on the territory of the institute in 2017. 2009 – renamed the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI[3]. Today NRNU MEPhI is a global leader in education, science, and innovation in the field of nuclear, radiation, sub-nano and nanotechnologies and their engineering.

Disadvantages and features of studying at MEPhI
Point-rating system. MEPhI has a credit-modular system and an international 100-point credit system ECTS. When calculating the credit score, the following factors are taken into account: attendance, results of midterm control tests, work in the classroom (oral answers, laboratory, reports), results of exams and/or tests[15].
Sub par language learning. In the curriculum of bachelor’s and specialty programs, there are only 4 academic hours of a foreign languages per week. This does not allow students to obtain sufficient knowledge of the language to read professional literature, participate in innovative projects and academic mobility programs (Megascience Projects, internships at leading Russian and foreign universities and research centers).
Student reviews. Students talk about problems with equipment in research centers and laboratories (for example, the MEPhI nuclear reactor has not been working for more than 7 years), the conservative nature of older teachers, and the administration’s indifference towards students[16].
Applicants from other countries can only be enrolled in the first year of bachelor’s, specialty or graduate courses. Training is possible both on a paid and state-funded basis (according to quotas and in the framework of international agreements). The latter is implemented through Rossotrudnichestvo representative office or to the Russian Embassy in your country. Check the procedure here.
The application process for the fee-paying seats starts on June 15 and finishes on August 21. There is a seperate deadline for foreign applicants coming from countries with visa requirements and applying for English-taught programs – 18 October. All the applicants must pass at least 2 entrance tests conducted by the Moscow Engineering Physics[17]. The schedule is available on the official website. These can be organized in remote format in some cases[17].
