Description of Temple University

Temple University attracts some of the most diverse, driven and motivated minds from across the nation and around the world. These students and faculty fuel its momentum in academics, athletics, research and the arts. Powering Temple’s ascent are innovative approaches in admissions and affordability; a campus transformation; plentiful creative and research opportunities; rigorous academic programs; an indelible bond with the city of Philadelphia; and groundbreaking work in science, research and technology.
Temple is known for its innovation in student-loan debt reduction and college affordability. Four-year academic merit scholarships for freshmen range from $3,000 to full tuition, and several include summer stipends for research, internships and study abroad.
In fall 2014, 88 percent of incoming freshmen signed up for Temple’s Fly in 4 program, which helps students limit their debt by ensuring they graduate in four years. As a part of Fly in 4, Temple awards four-year grants to 500 eligible students to reduce their need to work for pay. Temple also helps them take charge of their finances through courses, workshops and a money-management website.
Students applying for admission in fall 2015 can do so via the Temple Option , a new admissions path for talented students who may not perform well on standardized tests. If students choose the Temple Option, they answer brief essay questions instead of submitting SAT or ACT scores. The Temple Option reflects the university’s commitment to provide students of all backgrounds opportunities for high-quality college experiences.
The university’s 17 schools and colleges, nine campuses, 400+ degree programs, and approximately 38,000 students create one of the nation’s most comprehensive and creative learning communities. So while Temple is the 27th-largest university and fifth-largest provider of professional education in the U.S., students enjoy a 14:1 student-faculty ratio. Many of Temple’s 3,500 faculty members are among the most-cited and distinguished researchers in their fields.
This year, Temple moved into the National Science Foundation’s top 100 institutions for research expenditures, marking a threefold increase since 2004 -- the largest gain among institutions receiving more than $100 million. Over the past year, Temple scientists found a new way to target Alzheimer’s disease in the brain, were the very first to eliminate HIV-1 from a human cell, and created a new evolutionary map detailing the origin of life on Earth.
Temple students’ collegiate experience is a special amalgam of vibrant campus life and the cultural and social perks of the university’s location in the nation’s fifth largest city — complemented by 300+ student organizations and 19 Division-I athletics programs.
Temple’s main campus itself has recently undergone a massive transformation , including new state-of-the-art residence halls, education and science research buildings, and fitness and athletics facilities. Nearly 2,800 international students hailing from more than 100 countries, as well as Temple campuses in Rome and Tokyo, give students a truly global perspective that transcends cultures.
In recent years Temple has witnessed an unprecedented rankings surge in U.S.News & World Report , advancing its national ranking 11 spots in four years, making it one of the nation's top 30 gainers among all national universities during that time period and top 20 gainers among public national universities. A number of the university’s graduate programs are also highly ranked with the Fox School of Business and Beasley School of Law rising to their highest ranks ever.
Across the university, the excitement surrounding Temple’s momentum is palpable. Fueled by high graduation rates, cutting-edge facilities, top faculty recruiting, inventive academic and admissions pathways, and trailblazing research, Temple is graduating students ready to take charge
