The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology is a research-oriented graduate school established by the Korean government in 1993, and through the Ministry of Science and Technology has provided full financial support to students in order to produce scientific technologists with advanced leadership skills. To enhance its competitiveness, GIST has carefully selected leading fields of science and technology, which includes Information and Mechatronics, Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Life Science, Photon Science and Technology, and Medical System Engineering as areas of special focus. Each of these three schools and three departments further narrows its academic research to two or three fields to specialize and concentrate faculty?s research. With 136 faculty members currently teaching 803 students-370 in M.S. programs and 418 in Ph.D. programs-GIST has become a model for small-group elite education, with the lowest faculty to student ratio among Korean advanced educational institutions.
