GIST welcomes you, pioneers of advanced science and technology! The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology is a research-oriented graduate school established by the Korean government in 1993, and through the Ministry of Science and Technology has provided full financial support to students in order to produce scientific technologists with advanced leadership skills. To enhance its competitiveness, GIST has carefully selected leading fields of science and technology, which includes Information and Mechatronics, Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Life Science, Photon Science and Technology, and Medical System Engineering as areas of special focus. Each of these three schools and three departments further narrows its academic research to two or three fields to specialize and concentrate faculty?s research. With 136 faculty members currently teaching 803 students-370 in M.S. programs and 418 in Ph.D. programs-GIST has become a model for small-group elite education, with the lowest faculty to student ratio among Korean advanced educational institutions. In addition, students admitted to GIST have privileges such as all tuition and fees being waived, free dormitory rooms (including apartments for married students), supplementary research funds, and meal support, among others. GIST takes a leading role in performing research and development in cooperation with industry sectors. In 2010, GIST opened its doors to undergraduate students. GIST is the first university in the nation to adopt an innovative system providing a comprehensive, foundational science curriculum to serve as a stepping stone for research into a wide variety of science and engineering fields.
