Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is made up of 29 degree-granting divisions; 12 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and three schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, seven in Newark, and 14 in New Brunswick/Piscataway. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a lone instructor, a single sophomore, and a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914,...

Description of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick

Rutgers is the flagship of New Jersey’s public higher education with major northern, central and southern campuses and offices in all counties. Vibrant and diverse with 65,000 students, 24,000 faculty and staff, Rutgers has 34 undergraduate, graduate, professional schools and 200 research centers. 175 academic departments offer over 270 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional programs. Founded in 1766, Rutgers is among the nation's oldest institutions of higher learning. Yet Rutgers is the youngest of America’s major public research universities, designated New Jersey’s state university in 1945 and 1956. Since then Rutgers advanced to recognition with the top research universities in North America, in 1989 being asked to join the prestigious Association of American Universities. On July 1, 2013, the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act went into effect, integrating Rutgers with most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). The integration of the legacy elements of UMDNJ into Rutgers has created a fourth unit, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), which consists of a number of schools and units located on various sites but closely aligned with the campus in New Brunswick. Today Rutgers thrives as a cohesive academic community, building synergies across disciplines and campuses, equally committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. Driving Rutgers as a premier research university is the continuous, vigorous creation of intellectual capital—discoveries and insights that advance knowledge and improve the human condition
