The Politecnico di Milano was established in 1863 by a group of scholars and entrepreneurs belonging to prominent Milanese families. Its most eminent professors over the years have included the mathematician Francesco Brioschi (its first Director), Luigi Cremona, and Giulio Natta (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963). The Politecnico di Milano is now ranked as one of the most outstanding European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design, and in many disciplines is regarded as a leading research institution worldwide In Italy the term "Politecnico" means a state university consisting only of study programmes in Engineering and Architecture. The Politecnico di Milano is nowadays organised in 16 departments and a network of 9 Schools of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design spread over 7 campuses over the Lombardy region with a central administration and management. The 9 schools are devoted to education whereas the 16 departments are devoted to research. The educational policy of the Politecnico di Milano consists in offering different curricula tailored to the needs of its territory, which is considered one of most developed industrial areas in Europe. The Politecnico di Milano is one of the most outstanding technical universities in Europe. Established 1863, it is the largest school of architecture, design and engineering in Italy, with two main campuses located in Milan, the heart of fashion and design industries, and five more premises around the Lombardy region, in Northern Italy. Many important scientists and architects studied and taught here, among them Achille Castiglioni, Gio Ponti, Renzo Piano and Aldo Rossi, both Pritzker Price in 1990 and 1998 respectively, and Giulio Natta, Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963. The Politecnico di Milano offers innovative programmes at all levels, within 3 schools of engineering, 2 schools of architecture and 1 school of design. Thanks to a strong internationalization policy, many programmes are taught entirely in English, attracting an ever increasing number of talented foreign students, which now form a diverse community from more than 100 different countries. Politecnico di Milano has three main campuses located in Milan (Milano Leonardo, Milano Bovisa Durando and Milano Bovisa La Masa-Lambruschini), the heart of fashion and design industries and the future venue of Expo 2015, and five more premises around the Lombardy region: in 1987 a territorial diffusion process of the university began, the Politecnico Network, which led to the opening of the regional campuses of Como (1987) and Lecco (1989), and regional facilities in Cremona (1991), Mantova (1994) and Piacenza (1997), with the aim of establishing a more direct relationship with the students and interacting with the community's local businesses.
