In 2012, the University was awarded extensive funding within the framework of the Excellence Initiative, a nationwide competition borne by the German federal and state governments to promote top-level research and enhance quality education. As a multi-faculty institution, the University of Cologne covers a broad spectrum of disciplines and has developed internationally outstanding research profile areas on this basis, especially into: aging-associated diseases behavioural economic engineering and social cognition quantum matter and material, and socio-economic, cultural and political transformations in the global south The University of Cologne offers substantial support to young researchers maintaining several graduate schools and facilitates top level research, for instance, at the Cologne Cluster on Excellence in Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases (CECAD) and into plant sciences at the Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS). Academic excellence, internationality, a strong focus on research and a wide range of courses generate an energetic and inspiring environment and make the University of Cologne one of the most well-known and appealing modern universities.
