Most universities admit you on a diploma. The École normale supérieure – PSL admits you on a competition, and it runs two. The classic door is the concours, sat after two years in the French classes préparatoires: those who pass become trainee civil servants, paid a State salary and owing the public sector ten years afterwards. It is shut if you were not schooled in France. The second, the Sélection internationale, was built for everyone else — you apply from a foreign university, sit remote tests, and if you get through you are paid 1,130 USD/month for three years and housed on campus. Between 5 and 10% of applicants make it[1].

QS and Times Higher Education rank Université PSL, not ENS separately: 34th in QS 2027[8] and 48th in THE 2026[9].
What ENS will not do for you
🎒 There is no entry straight from secondary school
One completed year at a foreign university is the entry gate: CBSE or ISC results, WAEC certificates, a US diploma, the IB and A-levels are not enough on their own.
🇫🇷 In the humanities, French is a working requirement
Humanities candidates sit a written exam in French and need roughly B1 to cope, though no certificate is asked for; scientists may interview in English.
⏳ One attempt, one age ceiling, one residency bar
Only first-time applicants are considered, and time already spent in France counts against you: over 10 months for humanities, over 6 months of enrolment for sciences.
📉 The fee exemption is re-voted yearly under a tightening ceiling
Décret 2026-385 caps exemptions at 30% of eligible non-EU students in 2026-27 and 20% from 2028-29[10] — a board vote each year, not a promise in your letter.
How ENS is organised, and what you actually study
Concours entrants become élèves normaliens, fonctionnaires-stagiaires on a State salary against a ten-year public-service engagement[11]; international admits become normaliens étudiants, who take the grant and owe France nothing. Both follow the same three-year track: a master's plus 72 extra ECTS credits toward the Diplôme de l'ENS. This is not a multi-faculty university: 18 humanities disciplines from classics to cognitive studies sit beside the sciences across 43 master's specialisations, and the rue d'Ulm site holds them, a library of 800000 volumes and much of the housing. Degrees are accredited through Université PSL, which is how English-taught tracks such as the ICFP physics master reach ENS[12].
Health cover is free: every student joins the general social security scheme, which reimburses about 70% of costs, so budget for a complementary mutuelle. The grant needs a French bank account and first pays in October.
The Sélection internationale
Check the gate: one completed year of university study outside France at application, two by the following 1 September, under 26 on 1 December, no previous attempt.
Pick your stream — tests, weightings and French expectations differ between humanities and sciences.
Assemble the file: application form, school diploma, transcripts, CV, a motivation letter and two to four reference letters. Humanities candidates add a three-page research project.
Submit before the December deadline: 12:00 Paris time, not midnight and not your time zone.
If shortlisted, sit the remote tests: in humanities a written French exam, a subject oral and an interview; in sciences a subject oral weighted twice as heavily as the interview.
On admission you enrol as a normalien étudiant, the grant begins and housing is allocated.
A PSL master's or doctorate follows a shorter sequence.
Confirm whether it is a national diploma at the national rate or an institutional one with its own tuition.
Prove your language level: DELF or DALF at B2-C1 for French-taught programmes, C1 English for English-taught ones[16]. Book IELTS or TOEFL early.
For a doctorate, secure a supervisor and lab funding first, then open the visa file on the admission letter.
ENS had not published its 2027 calendar by August 2026; the pattern below is stable[3].
The grant obliges nothing: no public-service engagement, no separate form, no renewal contest, and housing arrives with it instead of through a queue. ENS also names Olympiad grants for IMO and IPhO medallists without publishing the terms. Working in France as a student
A residence permit allows paid work of up to 964 hours a year, though grant holders rarely need it and Paris work is scarce without French. Careers support runs through the alumni association's Espace Carrières, which circulates offers and reviews CVs[17]. The outcome picture is academic: over 70% of about 130 humanities graduates a year start a thesis, as do around 75% of some 170 scientists[18] — see our guide to PhD programmes. After a master's, the APS permit gives 12 months to find work, taxed at 113 USD.
Any credential in another language needs a certified translation into French or English[16], and ENS publishes no equivalence table: the file turns on your university transcript, not your school-leaving certificate. Give referees a month, and send them the discipline page so their letter speaks to the tests you will sit. Then sequence the paperwork: admission, visa file, proof of funds, validation tax. If your country restricts outbound education transfers, talk to your bank before the deadline rather than after it.

Does normalien étudiant status come with the Diplôme de l'ENS?
The DENS is an institutional qualification awarded alongside a national master's, not instead of one.
Can I transfer into ENS midway through a master's elsewhere?
Not through the international route, which admits at one level and only once. Apply to a PSL master's directly.
Can the registration fee be waived altogether?
Only where you arrive under an international agreement ENS has signed that provides for it[7]; otherwise you pay the national rate.
Will a rejection hurt a later PSL master's application?
Separate procedures, separate committees. Only the international route is single-use.
What happens to my funding if I need a fourth year?
The grant stops at 36 months; a fourth year needs separate funding, usually a doctoral contract from a PSL doctoral school.
Choose ENS–PSL when you are a year or two into a strong undergraduate degree in the sciences or the humanities, when a doctorate is the plausible next step, and when being paid to study in Paris outweighs the scale of the place.
Look elsewhere when you are applying from secondary school, need an English-only humanities environment, are past the age limit, or want a taught professional degree with a recruitment pipeline; other universities in Europe also allow repeat applications.
