Getting to know the mentor
Why did you decide to learn Spanish and German?
Since I was a kid, I heard some German words when family friends from Germany came to visit. We talked on the phone and exchanged cute postcards. This is how I gradually became introduced to this language and culture.
Aside from that, I studied at a school with an in-depth study of foreign languages. So, since the first grade, I dedicated a lot of my attention to English, and in high school, we had to choose a second language. I didn’t doubt it for a second and chose the German group.
At the university, I continued to study German and took up Spanish on my own. One of my German teachers was a native speaker. She inspired us with love for this language and told us a lot about Germany: from traditions to scholarships for foreigners and the nuances of the education system. I still think of those classes with warmth.
It turned out to be even more interesting with Spanish. Even before my studies at the university, I had already visited Spain several times thanks to my work at the International Sports Federation. I wanted to understand Spanish-speaking partners, and besides, I was in love with the sound of this language and its variety of accents. I was interested in music and films in Spanish.
I continued to improve my Spanish and English at the University of Nottingham in England.
In Nottingham I had a wonderful native Spanish teacher who truly loved his job and encouraged communication. I made friends with students from different countries and tried to communicate with them exclusively in their native languages (English, Spanish and German). This way, I got a chance not just to immerse myself in an English-speaking environment, but also to practice two other languages.
Why did you decide to help students study abroad?
For me, studying abroad was an exciting experience that taught me many things. I expanded my horizons and social connections, learned about different education systems and discovered many career prospects and interesting opportunities. I completely immersed myself into the language environment when I communicated and exchanged experiences with native speakers of three languages. And, of course, the emotions that I felt during travel, events and meetings in student clubs, were invaluable.
I support our students' desire to study at the best universities in the world. I also understand how important this decision is for them, and how difficult it can be to deal with organizational issues during the admission process. This is why I am genuinely happy to help them follow their dreams.
This work also allows me to combine my three passions: education, foreign languages, and communication.
What did you do before joining UniPage?
Since I was 14, I have participated in organizing international sporting events as a volunteer. I went through training and internships with the International Sports Federation, and at the age of 18, I joined them as a staff member.
Over the course of seven years, I have followed an interesting career path in the Federation: from press secretary to translator to head of the international department. We held many international competitions, congresses, business meetings and business trips.
At the same time, I taught private lessons in foreign languages. To expand my skills, I have also taught English at a university as an English Department specialist.
Tell us about your study abroad experience.
In my third year of university, I applied to participate in an exchange program with the University of Nottingham. I knew about this program even before I entered my university, and I always believed that I would join this program despite the tough competition.
Studying at the University of Nottingham was one of the most intense periods of my life. I had to combine learning as much as I could, attending classes (by the way, I didn’t miss a single class) and taking part in all sorts of additional activities.
During the entire period I participated in the Tandem Nottingham volunteer program. I helped foreigners learn Russian and talked a lot about my culture. I shared my all-time favorite films, cartoons, books and paintings with other students and appreciated their genuine interest. It was amazing to see so much love for my culture from foreigners!
There were lots of student communities in Nottingham. I joined a Spanish club, a Latin dance club, a hiking club, a film club and many others.
I took part in polls, helped organize student election campaigns, and went on university-run sightseeing tours around the UK as well as traveled by myself.
This exchange was an incredible experience that helped me gain many skills, knowledge and abilities. I made friends and acquaintances from different parts of the world and still keep in touch with many of them.
How many countries have you visited, and which trip was the most memorable?
I was lucky to visit over 10 countries. What I remember most is living in England and traveling around the UK.
I really enjoyed visiting Spain. This country is beautiful in May or September when it is already sunny and warm but not too hot.
What do you do in your spare time? How do you relax?
What I love the most is to travel, learn foreign languages and put my knowledge of languages into practice by communicating. For example, recently I started learning French and am passionate about the culture of this country.
I always make sure to have time to meet with friends and family, because being around loved ones inspires me the most.
I like both active recreation and the opportunity to recharge at home – to watch a fun movie, listen to music, or wrap myself in a blanket with an interesting book side by side with my pets.
I often go to a theater and cinema, visit sports events, concerts and festivals. I love long walks and outdoor exercise in the warmer seasons.
