At Freie Universitaet, the basis for educating outstanding young academics and scientists lies in granting utmost freedom for the pursuit of ideas, combining personal liberty with strong individual support from academic advisors, and establishing a multitude of opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary networking with young academics as well as seasoned scholars. The university thus encourages graduate students to pursue their studies with a high degree of autonomy and independence. At the same time, Freie Universitaet fosters individual supervision by faculty members from the respective departments and opportunities for regular peer reviews with other graduate students. Freie Universitaet offers masterâ??s degrees in more than 100 subjects; many courses are taught in English. The pursuit of doctoral degrees is possible in almost all subjects the university offers, given that a professor sponsors and advises the studentâ??s research project. Freie Universität Berlin is one of the leading universities in Germany and distinguishes itself through its modern and international character. In university rankings Freie Universität places among the best universities. Freie Universität is also one of the largest universities in Germany, offering about 190 degree progtrams for 29,000 students - of whom 15 per cent come from other countries. For many foreign scholars, such as fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Freie Universität is the university of preference for their stay in Germany. Without including Medicine, Freie Universität is currently lead university for ten collaborative research centers of the German Research Foundation DFG and also has four DFG research units. In addition, because of the wide variety of subjects it offers, Freie Universität has three collaborative research centers in the humanities and social sciences. Fourteen scholars of Freie Universität have to date been awarded a Leibniz Prize of the DFG, the most important German prize for research achievements. With the amount of 120 million euros of external funding acquired each year, Freie Universität canvasses a significant proportion of its income from third-party funds.
