Osaka University started in the Edo era, as Tekijuku, and the additional Kaitokudo, which was founded by five Osakan merchants. Since this beginning it has developed into establishment of scholarships and education, with the motto, “Live Locally, Glow Globally”. Today, Osaka University, with the incorporation of Osaka University of Foreign Studies, is comprised of 11 schools, 16 graduate schools, 25 research institutes and facilities. Furthermore, we have four foreign research institutes in San- Francisco, Groningen, Bangkok and Shanghai. 2011 marks 80 years since Osaka University was founded.
