Description of University of Southampton

The University of Southampton has a distinguished heritage that can be traced back to the creation of the Hartley Institution in 1862. The Hartley Institution became a university college in 1902. It was renamed Hartley University College, and subsequently became University College Southampton. In 1952, HM The Queen granted the University of Southampton a Royal Charter to award degrees in its own right, conferring full university status. Today, the University of Southampton is in the top one per cent of world universities (QS World University Rankings 2013-14) and is a forward-thinking institution that aspires to change the world for the better. Through education, research, innovation and enterprise, we provide opportunities that transform the lives of our students, our community, society and the economy. The University of Southampton is one of the UK’s top institutions for engineering, computer science and medicine. We combine academic excellence with an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to research, supporting a culture that engages and challenges students and staff in their pursuit of learning. As a founder member of the Russell Group of 24 major research-intensive universities of the UK, we offer a high-calibre study environment. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, more than 60 per cent of our research was considered to be world leading or internationally excellent. 24 subjects received top grades of 5 or 5*. The best grades came in medicine, engineering, music, sociology and social policy, computer science and nursing. Our multidisciplinary approach brings world-class researchers from across the University together to address global challenges such as climate change, global health, hi-tech crime and our ageing population, crossing the boundaries that traditionally separate subject areas to pioneer innovative solutions. With a global reputation for linking fundamental research with real-world applications, Southampton is home to cutting-edge research centres and facilities, including the National Oceanography Centre Southampton; the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research; the Optoelectronics Research Centre; the Institute for Life Sciences; the Microsoft Institute for High Performance Computing; the Centre for Maritime Archaeology, and many more. Our £3m supercomputer, Iridis3, is one of the most powerful University-owned supercomputers in the UK. Iridis3 is used for multidisciplinary research projects across the University. Below are some recent research highlights from the University: - Southampton is one of the top 20 research universities in the UK with consistently high scores for teaching and learning activities according to the Complete University Guide 2014 - For 60 years Southampton researchers have been at the forefront of the global revolution in digital communications. The University is the birthplace of the technology that led to the development of the internet. Our researchers led the world in developing the optical amplifier, which connects people globally via the internet. Professor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web, is a member of the University’s staff - Our aerodynamics research using our very own wind tunnel complex has helped the British Cycling team win seven gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal in the London 2012 Olympics. Our staff and students have worked to support over a 1,000 elite athletes as part of their preparation for the Beijing, Vancouver and most recently the London 2012 games. Their engineering excellence has contributed to sports that won 50 per cent of Team GB's medals at last year's Olympics - The University of Southampton was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for its innovation and world-leading expertise in performance sports engineering. The prize recognises four decades of innovation in design and testing, and technical expertise – supporting high-performance sports competitors - Engineers at the University of Southampton designed and flew the world’s first ‘printed’ aircraft, which could revolutionise the economics of aircraft design. The SULSA (Southampton University Laser Sintered Aircraft) plane is an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) whose entire structure has been printed, including wings, integral control surfaces and access hatches - Communities of species previously unknown to science have been discovered by scientists from Southampton on the seafloor near Antarctica, clustered in the hot, dark environment surrounding hydrothermal vents. Other deep-sea expeditions revealed details of the world's most extreme deep-sea volcanic vents, five kilometres down in a rift in the Caribbean seafloor - We design, build and operate the only autonomous submersibles ever to map below the Antarctic ice shelves, to aid the understanding of changes contributing to sea level rise. The University is leading the world in exploring Ocean Space exploration. It is one of the world's leading institutions devoted to research, teaching and technology development in ocean and earth science - Our research into the nature and effects of sound and vibration has been applied in the development of quieter jet engines, and has helped the deaf to hear through cochlear implants. Since 1990 the University has helped over 370 people obtain a new sense of hearing with a University of Southampton developed cochlear implant - We lead the world in finding medical solutions to major diseases, such as cancer, heart disease and strokes which appear in adult life before birth. Our Institute of Developmental Sciences pioneered the field of developmental science and its influence on later health, a field for which we are internationally recognised - The Southampton Centre for Biomedical Research, based at Southampton General Hospital, revolutionises the way research and clinical trials are conducted. It is the focal point for medical discoveries including the development of new treatments for respiratory diseases and the study of how our lifestyle and diet affects our health - Archaeologists and engineers from the University of Southampton are collaborating with the British Museum to examine buried Roman coins using the latest X-ray imaging technology. Originally designed for the analysis of substantial engineering parts, such as jet turbine blades, the powerful scanning equipment at Southampton’s µ-VIS Centre for Computed Tomography is being used to examine Roman coins buried in three archaeological artefacts from three UK hoards
