Dopo il 1870, con la presa di Roma e l?annessione all?Italia dello Stato Pontificio, altre radicali riforme vennero varate, si fondarono nuove cattedre, si prese in mano la delicatissima questione dei nuovi rapporti tra la Sapienza e le gerarchie vaticane. Artefice principale di questo processo di rinnovamento fu Terenzio Mamiani (1799-1885), filosofo e intellettuale di altissimo livello, che fu Ministro dell?Istruzione del nuovo stato; grazie a lui, la Sapienza ebbe modo di laicizzarsi e aprirsi alle nuove correnti del moderno pensiero europeo. Nel XX secolo l?università romana dovette confrontarsi con il primo conflitto mondiale; la Sapienza, presso la quale ferveva un forte movimento interventista, divenne da subito centro di aggregazione e di incontro per i nazionalisti e i patrioti. Presto cominciarono a serpeggiare, sia tra i docenti che nell?ambiente studentesco, tendenze anti-tedesche; l?università fu spesso teatro di violenti scontri e tumulti, e il Rettore Alberto Tonelli, benché convinto interventista, fu spesso costretto a sospendere le lezioni e a chiudere l?Ateneo. With over 700 years of history and 145,000 students Sapienza — founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII — is the first University in Rome and also the largest University in Europe: a city within the city. In Sapienza there are over 4,500 professors and 5,000 administrative and technical staff. The Rectorate is presently organized around a governing body model. A deputy Pro Rector and a group of Pro Rectors with specific skills support the Rector in the management of the University, with the help of some committees. Sapienza offers a wide choice of courses including over 300 degree programs and 250 first and second level specialised qualifications. Sapienza puts 155 libraries and 21 museums at the disposal of its students, as well as other services: Ciao (Information, reception and guidance), SoRT (Guidance and tutorship services) and assistance for disabled students. Sapienza University of Rome, founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, is one of the oldest universities in the world and a high performer among the largest universities in international rankings. Since its founding over 700 years ago, Sapienza has played an important role in Italian history and has been directly involved in key changes and developments in society, economics and politics. It has contributed to the development of Italian and European science and culture in all areas of knowledge. The future of Sapienza starts today thanks to its rich past and the contribution of the entire University community, whose main objectives are research, teaching and education. Faculty, students, technical and administrative staff are part of this community and thanks to their respective skills and responsibilities, they all contribute to its reputation and growth. The main campus, designed by Marcello Piacentini, was opened in 1935. It is situated close to the city centre, and is the largest in Europe - a real city within a city where teaching activities are integrated with libraries, museums as well as comprehensive student services.
