Description of University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is a leading, comprehensive research and teaching community committed to maximising the potential of the students, teachers and researchers who work and study there, whatever their social or cultural background. It is unique among Australia’s leading universities in the breadth of disciplines it offers and has more than 50,000 students, providing them with wide opportunities for personal development and cross-disciplinary study. The University’s courses reflect the latest thinking and knowledge. Located in the heart of Australia’s largest and most international city, the University welcomes students and researchers from all over the world and all backgrounds. Students from more than 140 countries are studying at Sydney, with international students making up one-fifth of the student body. The University’s research strategy aims to deliver multidisciplinary solutions to real-world problems by bringing together the expertise of bright minds. It provides significant support and large-scale investment to help researchers explore new frontiers of knowledge in areas of national and global importance. One key multidisciplinary initiative is the Charles Perkins Centre, which aims to ease the burden of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease – the leading causes of mortality and disease burden in the developed world and increasingly so in many developing countries. The University is creating an AU$385 million research and education hub that will house 1000 researchers and new facilities. University of Sydney researchers also harness new technology to find cleaner fuels and revolutionise computing, identify threats to international security, tackle climate change, and constantly seek to broaden our horizons. Collaboration is crucial to their success, and undergraduate students are taught by and study alongside top researchers, and in some cases contribute to their research. The University’s collaboration is strengthened by its partnerships with industry, other universities, international institutions and other countries. An important focus is developing Australia’s relationships with its geographical neighbours. The University’s China Studies Centre works in partnership with Chinese academia, government and business to better understand China’s impact on the world and Australia, and improve cooperation and relations. The Sydney Southeast Asia Centre brings together around 190 academics, teachers and researchers from more than a dozen faculties to forge an innovative and engaged approach to that region. At home, the University has made the promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation, engagement, education and research one of its core objectives, through the Wingara Mura – Bunga Barrabugu strategy, which aims to integrate an indigenous perspective into everything the University community does. On campus, students are involved in university life, from participating in social clubs to having a strong voice in University decision-making. This involvement sets Sydney apart from its Australian peers and generates a unique on-campus buzz. Today’s researchers build on a tradition of success forged by the University’s alumni, who have risen to prominence as prime ministers, Nobel laureates, Oscar-winners, business leaders, social activists and medical pioneers. They have all benefited from the University’s determination to develop curious minds ready to embrace challenges, to reveal new perspectives and to find solutions. The University reaches beyond its campuses to contribute to Sydney’s community life through championship-winning sports teams and ground breaking art and music. Its museums house the largest collection of antiquities in the southern hemisphere, while the Sydney Ideas public lecture series attracts globally prominent speakers to address the key issues facing today’s world. In creating the first tertiary education institution in Australia, the University’s founders recognised the power of education to change society. That belief remains just as strong today
