Chinese University of Hong Kong - Description

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a research-oriented comprehensive university founded in 1963 with the mission to combine tradition with modernity and to bring together China and the West. It is unique among universities in Hong Kong in that there are Nobel laureates and Fields and Turing awardees among its faculty members. Its research capability is attested by its many research centres and institutes and four state key laboratories. CUHK also has an excellent record of published research, both in discipline-specific journals and in more high-profile publications such as Science, Nature, and The Lancet. The Graduate School of CUHK was founded in 1966 to undertake research training of postgraduate students. Since then, the Graduate School has been developing rapidly. At present, the Graduate School offers through more than 60 Graduate Divisions a total of over 250 (including many overseas) programmes leading to higher degrees (Master's and Doctoral) or postgraduate diplomas.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a leading comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. Its lush 137-hectare campus overlooks the scenic Tolo Harbour just north of Shatin. The University has its origin in three colleges: New Asia College (founded in 1949), Chung Chi College (founded in 1951), and United College (founded in 1956). In 1963, the three colleges were amalgamated to form The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a fourth College, Shaw College, was established in 1986. Recently, five new colleges: Morningside College, S.H. Ho College, C.W. Chu College, Wu Yee Sun College, and Lee Woo Sing College have joined the CUHK family. CUHK has over 60 academic departments under eight faculties: Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Science. The Graduate School was set up to coordinate postgraduate studies in 1966, a year after the launch of its first graduate programme in 1965. The University's first doctoral programme was introduced in 1980. CUHK currently offers over 120 undergraduate programmes and over 250 postgraduate programmes. Its eight academic faculties and graduate school offer a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. The University is unique among Asian universities in its college system. Its nine residential colleges complement the formal curriculum with a variety of non-formal education and experiential learning opportunities to its full-time undergraduate students. Emphasis on general education, bilingualism and multiculturalism, and an extensive network of overseas partners for student exchange are characteristics of the educational experience at CUHK.
