Ask an international student in Pokfulam why they picked the University of Hong Kong over a similarly ranked campus in Britain or Australia, and the answer often has nothing to do with teaching. It is about the week after graduation: Hong Kong's IANG arrangement lets a fresh HKU graduate stay 24 months with no job offer and no quota[1]. That one rule changes the arithmetic of a rising tuition bill, because the degree comes with a two-year runway in one of Asia's densest labour markets. HKU is Hong Kong's oldest tertiary institution, incorporated by ordinance in 1911[2], and teaches in English across ten faculties.

Between the 2025-26 and 2026-27 cohorts, non-local undergraduate fees rose from 25,530 USD to 28,883 USD in non-STEM faculties and from 28,109 USD to 32,106 USD in STEM[6]. Budget above today's figure.
🇨🇳 "Non-local" is not "international": most of that population comes from Chinese Mainland
Of 25051 non-local students in 2025/26, 21739 are from Chinese Mainland[3]. Everyone else combined is roughly 7% of the university.

The 2024 CEDARS survey reports 50.8% of non-local graduates employed and 41.9% still studying, against 98.6% of all bachelor's graduates in work or study[14].
🧭 No published acceptance rate and no entrance exam: you are judged against a per-programme grade floor
Those floors are IB 32 for the BA, 36 for the BBA, 43 for the MBBS[15] — thresholds for consideration, not offers. Aggregator acceptance percentages are unsourced.
Faculties, campuses and the Common Core
Ten faculties — Architecture, Arts, Business and Economics, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Sciences — sit alongside five newer schools, including Computing and Data Science. Five faculties occupy the Pokfulam main campus, but Medicine works from Sassoon Road and Dentistry from Sai Ying Pun[16], so check your programme's site before signing a housing contract.

Every undergraduate adds 36 credits of Common Core to the major, and from the 2025-26 cohort there are five Areas of Inquiry rather than four, Artificial Intelligence being the addition[17]. An HKU bachelor's is broader, and less specialised, than a three-year British degree in the same subject.
The cohort lock cuts both ways: no mid-degree rises, but whatever premium your intake year carries, you carry for the whole degree. The STEM and non-STEM bands cut across faculties and schools alike[5].

Housing and living estimates are HKU's own, research tuition its fee schedule[6], the visa charge the Immigration Department's[18]. Two warnings: premium halls run far above that range on the detailed schedule[19], and taught master's fees ignore these bands entirely — most are self-funded and priced per programme, the full-time MBA at 75,817 USD for the 2025-26 cohort.
The non-JUPAS route
Applications close in stages, not on one date: a first round in late November, then rolling review until places run out.
Confirm HKU names your qualification: IB, A-levels, SAT with AP, Indian board examinations, ATAR and the Gaokao are listed, anything else is reviewed case by case[20].
Look up the expected lower boundary for the exact programme, not the faculty.
Sit IELTS or TOEFL early enough that the score is still valid at enrolment. IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online and the TOEFL Home Edition are not accepted.
Apply and pay before the first-round deadline; later submissions drop into the rolling round, where fewer places remain.
Have your counsellor or referee send documents by the date set for your round, about a week later.
Attend an interview if your faculty asks: they are selective, not universal, and cluster from November to January.
Accept, pay the non-refundable deposit and start the visa application the same week.
Graduate admission has no single university deadline.
Pick the programme first and read its own page — the only place the real deadline and fee exist.
Check whether it is government-funded or self-funded; self-funded 2027-28 rates reach departments only in early 2027[7].
Assemble transcripts, a valid English score, a CV and recommendation letters; research applicants add a proposal.
For MPhil and PhD places, contact a supervisor before applying and ask about studentships.

The 2027-entry timeline is not out yet. The confirmed 2026-entry cycle is the safest planning template: expect the same shape shifted by about a year, and check each date before relying on it[20].
HKU's filter lists 41 awards an applicant may be eligible for[21]. Selection follows the rolling admission cycle, so there is no separate scholarship deadline.

On-campus work now, IANG later
The baseline rule allows 20 hours a week in term and unlimited work from June to August. That cap has been suspended since 1 November 2024 for eligible full-time non-local students, with no restriction on hours or location, administered through a No Objection Letter issued via HKU rather than a separate application. It is a relaxation under review, not permanent law[23].
Afterwards, IANG gives 24 months to start, then three-year extensions once you hold a graduate-level job. Check the exclusions first — nationals of Afghanistan, Cuba and the DPRK are ineligible, and nationals of Laos, Nepal and Vietnam qualify only through a UGC-funded programme, which HKU degrees are. On campus, CEDARS runs a jobs portal limited to HKU students and a career series for non-local students on work-visa mechanics[24]. Surveyed bachelor's graduates started on 4,318 USD/month gross on average in 2024[14].
Results must come from the awarding body itself — the IB, Cambridge, Pearson, the College Board or your national board — and from India, Nigeria or the Philippines that takes weeks, not days. Anything not in English needs a certified translation of your diploma alongside the original, plus certified copies. If your qualification is not on HKU's named list, email Admissions for a written equivalence view before paying the application fee.
The referee deadline sits about a week behind the application deadline, so brief your counsellor in October, not late November. And HKU advises four to six weeks for its own assessment plus eight to ten weeks for the visa decision, so the clock starts when the offer arrives, not when you accept it. What non-local applicants ask
Does HKU publish a grade table for WASSCE or Philippine senior high school results?
No. Neither is named on HKU's international-qualifications pages, so both fall under general case-by-case review.
I have a US high school diploma but no AP or SAT scores. Can I still apply?
HKU's published standards treat SAT and AP results as the recognised US evidence; a diploma alone is not shown as sufficient. Put an unusual profile to Admissions rather than assuming an exception.
Is medical insurance compulsory before I can enrol?
No. HKU strongly advises worldwide cover but does not make it a condition of enrolment, unlike some other Hong Kong universities. Its health service handles primary care only.
Do joint and dual degrees cost the same as a single-faculty programme?
No. Combined degrees carry their own composition fee, sometimes lower than the standard non-local band.
When are the taught master's deadlines?
There is no university-wide date: each programme sets and publishes its own schedule, so the programme page is the only reliable source.
Choose HKU when you want an English-taught degree, when your subject sits near the top of the QS subject table rather than merely inside the top 100, and when your plan after graduation involves Asia. It suits research students especially, since they pay the local rate. Look elsewhere when cost drives the decision, when you want to switch majors late, or when your plan depends on a large cohort from outside Greater China; in that case weigh the National University of Singapore too.
