Melbourne in brief: from an 1853 statute to a Group of Eight campus
The university opened under a state Act granted Royal Assent on 22 January 1853[1], making it Australia's second-oldest. Its founding statute already carried today's shape: a Bachelor of Arts first, professional degrees in medicine, law and music afterwards. Melbourne belongs to the Group of Eight, Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Its best-known research is the bionic ear, developed under Professor Graeme Clark and first implanted in 1978; its Nobel laureates include Frank Macfarlane Burnet, Peter Doherty and Elizabeth Blackburn.
Most Australian universities let you enrol straight into law, medicine or engineering at eighteen. Melbourne does the opposite. You pick one of nine broad bachelor's degrees, spend three years inside it, and only then apply to the professional qualification — the Doctor of Medicine, the Juris Doctor, the Master of Architecture. The university now calls this the Melbourne curriculum[2]; almost everyone else still says Melbourne Model. Either name, it is the structural fact that should decide whether you apply here, because it moves your timeline, your budget and your point of commitment. Becoming a doctor here is a seven-year, two-application project. Whether that is worth it depends on your subject, and on whether you can carry the extra years of fees.

What the Melbourne Model costs you
⏳ The professional degree adds years and a second set of fees
A medical career here means a three-year bachelor's and then a four-year Doctor of Medicine whose indicative total course fee is 383,785 USD[18].
🌍 West African and UAE school certificates are not on the direct-entry list
WAEC and WASSCE results are absent from Melbourne's closed list of directly admitted qualifications, so West African applicants normally need an approved foundation year first[16]. No UAE national qualification is listed either — applicants there use the IB or A-levels.
💰 Fees are re-set every January, and the totals assume further rises
Between the 2026 and 2027 tables, first-year fees on the courses we checked rose by roughly 5-10%, and the university says its indicative total already builds in an estimated annual increase[19].
📉 No published acceptance rate, and no soft factors to lean on
The university publishes no admit-rate data, and aggregator sites quote anything from 25% to 80%. Because the decision is score-driven, a marginal grade cannot be argued around with a good essay.
Nine faculties, and campuses well beyond Parkville
Nine faculties sit under the University Council: Architecture, Building and Planning; Arts; Business and Economics; Education; Engineering and Information Technology; Fine Arts and Music; Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Science; and Melbourne Law School[20]. Most teach at Parkville, the original 1853 campus; Fine Arts and Music work from Southbank, while Burnley, Dookie, Creswick, Werribee and Shepparton cover the field disciplines[17]. Research runs through more than 70 centres and institutes[3], so a graduate researcher's supervisor and their faculty are often separate conversations.
The undergraduate menu is deliberately short: Agriculture, Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design, Fine Arts, Music, Science and Oral Health[4] — nine named degrees, where the 2008 model launched with six. Each is broad rather than vocational, which is the mechanism that keeps a later move into architecture, law or medicine open[2]. Specialisation comes afterwards, as two or more further years: the Juris Doctor over three, the Master of Architecture over two to three, the Doctor of Medicine over four, plus research degrees for anyone heading toward a doctoral qualification. Teaching runs on two semesters, one starting in February and one in July.
Tuition is priced by subject, not by course, so two students in the same degree can pay different amounts. The figures below are the university's indicative first-year estimates for a full-time international student starting in Semester 1 2027.
Overseas Student Health Cover is compulsory for the length of your visa, normally billed with the deposit, at a premium set by the insurer, not a published price[26]. The Student Services and Amenities Fee that domestic students pay is covered for international students[27].
Into a bachelor's first, the professional degree second
International applicants apply directly online, not through the VTAC system Australian school-leavers use. The undergraduate route:
Find your qualification on the recognised-qualifications list and read off its entry score. CBSE, ISC and Indian State Board results, the Philippine Year 12 academic-track diploma, the US high school diploma, the IB and A-levels are all admitted directly[16].
Book IELTS Academic or an accepted alternative early — Oral Health needs 7.0 in every band, above the standard 6.5.
Choose between a plain bachelor's application and a Graduate Degree Package.
Apply with certified transcripts and pay the application fee.
Accept the offer, pay the deposit and arrange health cover; the university then issues your Confirmation of Enrolment.

Melbourne scholarships: automatic and applied-for
The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship goes to citizens of countries whose GDP per capita is at or below 10,000 USD on World Bank data, covers a first tertiary qualification only, and remits 20% of tuition for awards made from 2027 — down from 25%, while the number offered grows from at least 110 toward a planned 225. Selection is on final school results, and winners hear within five working days of their offer[34]. Graduate researchers do far better: full tuition remission for up to four years of a PhD, a living allowance of 25,062 USD a year at the 2026 rate, a relocation grant of 1,903 USD from outside Australia and health cover[35]. Neither award is applied for separately: consideration is automatic once you hold an offer. The awards that do take a form are the named and external ones layered on top, each with its own closing date[35]. For a taught master's those, plus outside international scholarship schemes, are the only route short of self-funding.
Your visa, not the university, sets the limits: 48 hours a fortnight while the course is in session, unlimited in scheduled breaks, and no cap at all for research master's and doctoral students[11]. The university adds a careers service with a job board for enrolled students[36] and the Students@Work program, which places students in paid on-campus internships of three to nine months[37]. The post-study subclass 485 visa has an age ceiling of 35 for most applicants; Indian nationals get longer durations under the Australia–India agreement. One concrete outcome: of Melbourne Law School's 2020 Juris Doctor cohort surveyed 18 months out, 94% were in full-time work[38].
Applying to Melbourne from overseas
Applying from abroad adds four failure points, and all of them are administrative rather than academic. Documents: order certified transcripts and award certificates early, with certified English translations where the original is not in English, because a registrar can take weeks. Grade conversion: do not translate your marks yourself and do not buy a WES or ECE evaluation for admission here — the university publishes the score it wants for your exact qualification. Money timing: the deposit and the visa charge fall within weeks of each other, and transfers from India, Nigeria or the Gulf take days to clear — no deposit, no Confirmation of Enrolment, no visa. Sequencing: for a February 2027 start, an English test in September leaves room for a resit, an application in October for a missing document, and a visa lodged in December for processing.
Does CBSE or ISC give direct entry, or do I need a foundation year?
Direct entry. CBSE, CISCE and State Board examinations each have their own entry-score page, and no foundation year is needed if you meet the score[39].
Can I use AP results instead of the SAT or ACT?
Yes — an aggregate of three or four AP scores replaces either test. Melbourne is not test-optional, AP earns admission eligibility but never course credit, and a GED is not accepted.
What GPA does a US applicant actually need?
On an unweighted 4.0 scale it varies by degree: Arts 2.7 with SAT 1120, Science 3.2 with SAT 1210, Commerce 3.4 with SAT 1270, Oral Health highest at 3.7 with SAT 1330[40].
Is anyone exempt from the application fee?
Yes: graduate research applicants, current and former Melbourne students, sponsored applicants, and exchange or study-abroad students[9].
Can my partner or child come with me on the student visa?
They can be included, but the financial evidence rises: add 6,595 USD for a partner and 2,823 USD for each school-age child[11].
Melbourne rewards a particular plan
Choose Melbourne when graduate entry is a feature rather than an obstacle: when you are strong academically but not yet sure whether you want medicine, law or research, or when you are heading for a funded PhD, where the package competes with North America. Look elsewhere if you knew at eighteen what you want to practise — a direct-entry professional bachelor's at the Australian National University or the National University of Singapore is faster — and look elsewhere if your budget stretches only to the first degree, because this model puts the expensive years at the end.
