For bachelor’s programs, it is sufficient to have an average GPA of 2.5 out of 5 and to confirm your language proficiency at the B2 level. This can be achieved through an internal language test administered by your chosen university.

Hungary boasts a total of 24 universities, with six being among the top 100 universities in the QS Emerging Europe and Central Asia ranking[-]:
However, placing your trust solely in these rankings may not be the wisest approach. When selecting a Hungarian university in Hungary, you should also consider at least three additional criteria.
If your intention is to pursue studies in Hungarian, then this becomes an irrelevant criterion for you.
In total, Hungary offers approximately 500 programs conducted in English. However, a majority of these programs are available at the master's and PhD levels. Options for bachelor's programs are comparatively narrower. For example, Eötvös Loránd University only offers 11 programs[3], while Budapest University of Technology and Economics provides 48 programs[4], and the University of Debrecen surpasses these with around 54 offerings[5].
Compared to other countries, Hungarian universities typically maintain more lenient admission requirements.
For instance, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 is required for universities in Finland. Contrarily, in Hungary, programs admit candidates with a 5.5 score[6].
Nevertheless, specific requirements vary between Hungarian universities. To elaborate, Corvinus University of Budapest mandates entrance exams for several programs. For business and management programs, you may be required to take a proficiency test in mathematics or submit SAT scores with a minimum of 500 points[7].
The cost of education depends on the chosen program. At the University of Debrecen, a year of study averages 6,780 USD, though the cost rises to 19,097 USD for medical programs[8]. Conversely, at the University of Szeged, the same education comes at a more economical rate, starting from 1,695 USD per year. Even for medical programs, the cost at this institution remains relatively affordable, amounting to 8,927 USD[9].

Advanced searchHungarian universities operate on a single entry e-admission system. Though currently lacking an English version, it offers convenience in accessing updated requirements and deadlines at universities using automatic page translation. Instructions for international admission via e-admission can be found here.
Direct applications to chosen universities are also possible. The process varies for each institution. Some only require sending a PDF application and documents via email, while others have their distinct systems with personalized accounts. For instance, SEMAPHOR at Semmelweis University has a separate portal for applications in English and German programs.
Essential requirements include a translated copy of your diploma in either Hungarian or English, coupled with a notarized transcript containing grades and course details.
Other requirements:
In Hungary, classes start in September and February. Application deadlines are usually in November, May, and June.
Be sure to verify the exact dates on the university websites.
Hungarian universities handle the legalization and recognition of certificates and diplomas internally. In cases where your educational level falls short for the intended program, an examination might be required. This typically occurs when specific subjects lack sufficient coverage or hours.
However, this method of recognition does not grant the right to employment in Hungary. If you plan to work while studying, you should get in touch with MEIK. The certificate processing fee is approximately 15000 to 166 USD. Documents can be submitted in person or by mail.

In Hungary, you can begin your application for bachelor’s programs right after completing the 11th grade, without the need for preparatory courses. If you are 18 or older, you can apply independently. If you are under 18, you will need a power of attorney from your parents or their physical presence at the university to sign the necessary documents.
The application process can be completed on the official website of your chosen university or through the e-admission service.
Following the application stage, universities typically conduct online interviews in the language of your chosen study program. In some fields, entrance exams may also be required.
Additional requirements:
Documents must be translated into English or Hungarian and notarized.
Admission to master's programs shares many similarities with the process for bachelor's programs. It is highly recommended to pursue a master's degree in a field related to your previous studies. You can apply directly to the university or use the convenient e-admission service. When submitting your application, be sure to include your diploma along with its translation in either Hungarian or English.
Certain universities may require additional oral and written exams, as well as interviews. A strong GPA and relevant experience will significantly boost your chances of admission.
Some universities may require a motivation letter.

Before submitting an application, consider reaching out to your prospective supervisor to discuss a research plan. This step is pivotal for gaining admission to PhD programs at Hungarian universities.
In your application, include references to your published scientific works whenever possible. Doing so will enhance your likelihood of admission. Certain programs require recommendations from both educators and employers. Frequently, during the application process, you will be required to compose a 500-800 word motivation letter.
Once your documents are submitted, you may receive an invitation for an online interview.
Not always required:
In Hungary, universities commonly offer language programs. To enroll in these programs, basic language skills and full payment are typically sufficient.
Some esteemed universities, such as the University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged, provide comprehensive Foundation programs. These preparatory courses equip students with the necessary knowledge in their future fields of study, as well as language proficiency. At many universities, the credits earned during these programs can also be applied towards future studies. The preparatory program at the University of Debrecen even guarantees admission for students with a 4.0 GPA[11].
Applying for a Foundation program is as straightforward as enrolling in other courses — pay for your tuition and demonstrate a minimum language proficiency of at least A2 during the entrance exam.
The cost of these courses amounts to approximately 6,000 USD for a duration of 10 months.
